Tom remembered everything that happened as he was in school. What I was thinking, Ginny's life was not FULLY taken from her, but he was becoming very strong. He could cast spells. With a spell from Harry's wand he forced Fawkes from him. I was thinking if he endowed the Diary with more than one enchantment (horcrux, ability to take life, ability to persuade, intelligence and more) or if putting the Horcrux into the Diary was enough to do all of those things.
